This setup was then used for investigation of five different situations to address Newton's third law (see figure 2).(1)The less-dense tube (tied to a string) is put alongside the water-containing beaker on top of an electric balance; areading of weight is made.(2)The tube in allowed to float freely on thewater while tied to a piece of string whuch passes through the eye of a loop at the bottom of the beaker; the weight is read (same as 1). The first and second situations are set up to address whether a change in water level is needed to explain the weight increase.(3)the tube is made by pulling the string to be somewhere between the surface of the water and the bottom of the beaker while the other end is tied to the side of the beaker; again another reading is taken (same as 1 and 2).
