Forensic imaging is a complement that is not expected to be a
substitute for autopsy, which remains the reference protocol. However,
in the context of the growing development of virtual autopsy,
Andenmatten et al. (2008) demonstrated that ballistic wound
examinations from autopsy and medical imaging were consistent.
Collaborations between forensic ballistics and forensic medicine
that have been forged to analyze these types of cases are part of
the Virtopsy project (documentation of foreign material, forensic
reconstruction, education and research).
