Green unicellular marine microalgae Dunaliella salina is one of the
most promising sources of β-carotene which comprises 14% of dry
weight as β-carotene at appropriate culture conditions, the highest among all the natural carotenoids sources.
It has been observed that Dunaliella accumulate large amount of β-carotene under harsh environmental conditions such as high irradiance and high salinity which enhance production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cell.
With the developments of optimum culture and extraction conditions, D. salina has been commercially cultured as a source of β-carotene and currently, it has been used in cosmetics and dietary supplement preparations.
