Young adults aged between 18 and 25 on a night out were asked to complete an hourly questionnaire tracking the drinks they consumed, spending and mood as part of a pilot research project.
Lead researcher Cassandra Wright from Burnet's Centre for Population Health said there was a strong acceptance and uptake rate from participants and the pilot study was now being expanded.
She said her colleagues were initially sceptical when she told them about the study design.
"When I said that we wanted to get young people to fill out surveys every hour while they were at a party or at the pub, people literally laughed at me, saying that no-one would ever do it," Ms Wright said.
"But we had a really high response rate ... throughout the nights, 90 per cent of all of the surveys were filled in meaning that we got a really clear picture into what the young people are actually doing on their nights out," she said.
