Patients who do not tolerate enteral feeding should have parenteral nutrition started
immediately while continuing attempts are made to re-establish enteral nutrition. (2)
Parenteral nutrition would be administered in consultation with the hospital TPN team or TPN
pharmacist, as per hospital protocols.
Overfeeding should be avoided. It can result in metabolic complications, including increased
carbon dioxide production, leading to difficulty in ventilatory weaning, high glucose levels,
raised triglyceride levels and hepatic steatosis.
