Early in their education, nurses learn that one of their most crucial roles is that of patient advocate. In the perioperative environment, nurses are charged with being the main communication conduit between the patient and the team; therefore, their contributions to the overall safety of the patient experience cannot be overestimated. Perioperative nurses are in a unique position to use their communication skills to further the overall mission and vision of nursing, as well as that of the professional workplace in establishing heath care systems that are dedicated to quality improvement and patient safety.
