Ethnopharmacological relevance: The stembarkpowderof Hesperethusa crenulata or Thanakahasbeen used onthefacebyMyanmarwomenformorethanathousandyearsasaskincareregiment. Aim ofthestudy: The aimofthecurrentstudywastobothverifythesafetyandevaluatesomebiological activities oftheThanakabark. Materials andmethods: Maceration oftheThanakabarkpowderresultedinhexane,dichloromethane, ethyl acetate,methanol,85%ethanolandwaterextracts.Forthesafetyevaluation,cytotoxicityand genotoxicity ofeachextractweretested.Antibacterial,tyrosinaseinhibition,antioxidantandanti- inflammatory activitieswereevaluatedforeachextract. Results andconclusions: Extracts fromThanakabarkshowedstronganti-inflammatory,significantantiox- idation, mildtyrosinaseinhibitionandslightantibacterialactivities.Allextractsandtheoriginalbark powder showednodetectablegenotoxicitywhileverylowcytotoxicitywithIC50 value ofmorethan 12 mg/mlwasdetectedinthewaterextract.Thus,theuseoftheThanakabarkintheformofawatery paste asaskincareregimentisnotonlysafebutalsobeneficialtoskin
