The magnetic stripe on credit cards is old technology, but it’s cheap and reliable. Anyone who wants to clone a stolen card, though, will have no trouble doing so. Even pairing cards with a security chip is only so effective. That’s why researchers from the University of Twente in the Netherlands have devised a system known as Quantum-Secure Authentication. It leverages the innate weirdness of particles at the quantum scale to make unforgeable ID tags on your cards.
