Drug therapy for H. pylori infection consists of to 2 week of antibiotic therapy using amoxicillin, tetracycline,metronidazole or darithromycin. Antibiotics should be used in combination with ranitidine bimuth citrate,bismuth tripotassium dicitratobismuthate or a proton pump inhibitor.
Duodenal and gastric ulcers recur in up to 80% of patients who receive medications that reduce gastric acid but don't receive anitbiotics.In those those treated with antibotics, the recurrence rate is 6%
More drastic measures
Gastroscopy allows visualisation of the bleeding site and coagulation by laser or cautery to control bleeding.
Surgery is indicated if the patient doesn't respond to other treatment or has a perforation,suspected cancer or other complications.
