The primary ligaments involved in a LAS are the anterior talofibular ligament
(ATF), the calcaneofibular ligament (CF), and posterior talofibular ligament (PTF),
which span both the talocrural (ankle) and subtalar joints. Together, these joints
combine to allow a large range of three-dimensional motion in the foot and ankle
complex. The talocrural joint is the articulation of the distal tibia and fibula with the
trochlea of the talus; with an oblique axis that is primarily directed medial to lateral.
The principle motions at the talocrural joint are plantar flexion and dorsiflexion. The
subtalar joint (STJ) is the articulation between the talus and calcaneus and has an
oblique axis that is situated close to the sagittal plane with an incline of approximately
42° (Rockar PA, 1995). Its orientation allows nearly equal amounts of inversion and
eversion in the frontal plane and abduction and adduction in the transverse plane.
PREVIEW 2
Both the talocrural and subtalar articulations have been shown to sustain damage with
a LAS (Hertel et al., 1999; Ishii et al., 1996; Brantigan et al., 1977).
