Since one of the key benefits of sharing stories with infants and toddlers is fostering close relationships among the story participants, it is best to share stories with no more than three children at a time, so everyone can nestle close. Keeping groups small also allows each child to be an active participant. One or even a very few children can join in a story's refrain without being too noisy or disruptive for the other children in the room. Small groups also make it easier to maintain children's interest through eye contact and gentle touches. Larger groups are likely to require the adult to spend more time keeping order than sharing the story, which takes away from the enjoyment.
