Envenomation
Annually, there are more than 2.5 million cases of snakebite, of which about 100,000 are fatal, mostly in rural tropical areas (White, 2005). Snakebite is an important public health problem in many tropical and subtropical countries and is considered a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization.
Venom components that affect hemostasis are mostly found in Viperidae and Crotalidae snakes, but the others often contain some as well. The neuronal system is principally the target of Elapidae snakes.
