The phytochemical anlysis of the betel leaf extract revealed the presence of important bioactive
components (Table 1). From other scientific studies and researches it was observed that the presence of
antioxidants in other medicinal plants imparted antimicrobial properties to those plats. These studies prompted
us to study the antimicrobial properties of betel leaf extract. The antimicrobial effects were studied for four
bacteria to start with viz Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus vulgaris and Staphylococcus
