Standard data can alsoplay a significant role in helping the IE to identify waste. For example, in assembly line operations, the primary objective is to balance the work load proportionately between all workers, so all are equally busy. If this does not happen, gross inefficiencies will result. In most cases these inefficiencies are not obvious from a superficial overview of all jobs in the operation. An example of this took place in an auto assembly plant in Flint, Michigan. The job in question involved the installation of steering columns. Operators claimed they were overworked and wanted some of the tasks assigned to this operation shifted to another operators claimed they were overworked and wanted some of the tasks assigned to this operation shifted to another operator. An initial observation found that the operator was allotted. 05 minutes to position with securing the dash mat. The operator received a .04 minutes for tearing tape from a roll to secure power seat wires, which in fact did not occur in this operation. Finally, the operator received a .02 minutes for dunnage and stock handling that also did not in savings of .12 minutes in labor time, and produced a more accurate description of this specific operator’s job function. A comparison of this operation with before and after standards is illustrated in Table 1.
