Florentijn Hofman
Florentijn Hofman is a Netherland sculptor. Like sculptor Jeff Koons, Hofman uses childlike themes in his work including animals, toys and monsters. The sculpture pictured is titled "Fat Monkey" and is created entirely out of inflatables and flip flops. Fat Monkey was a site specific sculptor created in Sao Paulo in 2010. This sculpture measures 5 x 4 x 15 meters. Hofman chose to use the flip flops to create an almost pixelated representation of this popular Brazilian icon. Florentijn Hofman is known for his big ideas and his big sculptures. He uses everyday objects for inspiration, such as a rubber ducky and a stuffed monkey. Other installations he has created involved painting parts of the city bright bold colors to reflect the artist’s less than serious personality. Hofman says that the public’s reaction to his work is often the most important aspect of creating the piece. He wants people to be engaged by his art and connected to other viewers.
