Morgan Schneiderlin: Why Arsenal, Man Utd and Tottenham want him
The Southampton midfielder is one of the most in-demand players in the top flight - and no wonder...
There are few footballers on the planet as in-demand at the moment as Morgan Schneiderlin. The Southampton and France midfielder is clearly considered to be worthy of greater things given the interest he continually attracts from the top clubs in England.
He offers superb screening in front of the defence, something that perhaps his potential suitors in Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham have been lacking in recent years.
He is powerful midfield enforcer, specialised in regaining possession and distributing the ball forwards quickly and accurately for the more attack-minded players to work their magic higher up the pitch, though he does also offer an attacking threat of his own, too.
There is arguably no better player in the Premier League at carrying out the tasks required of a defensive midfielder. Over the past three seasons, Schneiderlin has made a combined 625 tackles and interceptions – a total over 100 higher than any other player and nearly 200 more than any other midfielder.
Last season, he maintained a tackle success rate of 82.3 per cent, making one on average every 22.8 minutes – both rates are up there with the best in the top flight.
He made more tackles than any player Arsenal, United or Tottenham player did and could perhaps add a little extra bite to any of those teams’ midfields.
Clearly, he is established as one of the best ball-winning central midfielders around: a tough-tackler with a fantastic reading of the game and the physicality to match.
Schneiderlin scored an impressive four goals from defensive midfield last season
He is also exceptionally assured in possession, too, maintaining a pass success rate of 89.3 per cent, the third-highest of all central midfielders to start at least 20 matches over the course of the 2014-15 campaign.
• Are Liverpool ahead of rivals with early deals?
The majority of those passes may well be short to a central midfield partner, but that is exactly what he is tasked with doing.
