The use of microalgae for wastewater treatment was
suggested several years ago (Caldwell, 1946; Oswald
and Gotaas, 1957), because of their ability to remove
effectively and at a low cost the excess nutrients and
other contaminants which are the causes of eutrophication
and pollution of receiving water bodies (Pouliob
and De La Notie, 1985; De la Notie et al., 1992).
