The hazard area of people affected for each release scenario is calculated using the U.S. DOT ERG table of initial isolation and protective action distances (9). For the material analyzed, the affected areas for different atmospheric conditions and release sizes are: 0.011 mi2 for daytime/nighttime small spills, 0.092 mi2 for daytime large spills, and 0.252 mi2 for nighttime large spills. Finally, GIS was used to perform an overlay analysis of the affected area and the population density to calculate the consequences of a release along each of the routes analyzed.
