Analytic approach
Frequency distributions were used to summarize categorical
data. Cross tabulations were computed with year of residency as the predictor variable, and documentation and meeting a quality
metric were the outcome variables. Chi-square tests were used
to measure the associations between 2 categorical variables of
interest. Separate logistic regression models were fit for each
quality indicator. Models estimated the odds of meeting a quality
indicator if the patient was treated by a second-year or third-year
resident as compared to a first-year resident. Models were
computed before and after adjusting for patient demographics,
obesity and BMI. The IBM SPSS Statistics software version 19
(IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, USA) was used for data analysis.
