It was perhaps the first social network to boom in Thailand nearly a decade ago. Founded in 2003, Hi5 became the second largest social network after MySpace by 2007. Its early features included friend network, photo sharing, user groups and status updates.
YouTube is a video-sharing website and also the biggest video database covering different fields. Founded in 2005, the first inspiration for YouTube came from Janet Jackson’s performance at the 2004 Super Bowl when her breasts were exposed, and the second from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Video clips of both events were hard to find so the idea of a video-sharing site took off.
The outstanding feature of this social networking service are the 140-character messages called ‘tweets’, which have been described as the ‘SMS’ (short Message Service) of the internet. Twitter was created in 2006 and rapidly gained popularity worldwide. In 2012, more than 100 million users posted an average of 340 million tweets per day. And in 2013, it became one of the ten most-visited website.
