A clear interpretation or judgment. Your goal in analyzing a text is to
lead readers through careful examination of the text to some kind of interpretation
or reasoned judgment, sometimes announced clearly in a thesis
statement. When you interpret something, you explain what you think it
means, as Berry does when she argues that the two ads suggest that our
clothing choices enhance our individuality. She might instead have chosen
to judge the effectiveness of the ads, perhaps noting that they promise
the impossible: uniqueness through mass-produced clothing. Anderson
judges “stupid games” to be positive, as “they force us to make a series of
interesting choices about what matters, moment to moment, in our lives.”
