Sustainability was characterized in Chapter 3 by four key principles: the limits principle,
the means and ends principle, the needs principle, and the complexity principle. The
scientific approaches at the root of each of these principles were described in the previous
chapter. It is important now to understand how all approaches fit into a dynamic evolution
from disciplinary or partial approaches into the more integrated and holistic vision provided
by sustainability.
