We have now demonstrated that copper ions can also be utilized as a catalyst for the [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of propargylic sulfinates to allenic sulfones. The copper cation can either be simple homogeneous copper(I) or (II) salts or can be a copper-doped heterogeneous USY zeolite catalyst. The transformation is less rapid with copper catalysis than silver catalysis, but the use of copper instead of silver and using a recoverable catalyst makes the process more ‘green’. The development of the rearrangement reaction and further applications of allenic sulfones is currently underway and results will be reported in due course.
