Whereas there is no doubt that such approaches are needed if undesired trade-offs are to be avoided it is important to secure practicability of measurement, assessment and indicator approaches (Bai & Sarkis, 2014a). Zhang et al. (2014) seem trapped in complexity of their own making with multi-objective maximisation in a Pareto optimal setting and large scale supply chains. The result based on the actual data available, which only considers greenhouse gases, total costs and lead times, and not social issues, is that a considerable decrease in greenhouse gas emissions or lead time can be achieved by a small increase in cost in the single period examined.
