In late 2000, Alibaba looked forward to rolling out its BizSite product, a website builder complete with automated templates that would allow members to build an online storefront that Alibaba could host and link to its marketplace in various way (see Exhibit 5). Not only would BizSite allow Alibaba members to create their own website to showcase themselves and their products, but by linking their sites to Alibaba, interested members also could stand out from the lengthy lists of product offers and company names submitted by its other members. Alibaba was evaluating whether and how to charge participating members for this service: its closest competitors offered a similar service for fees substantially higher than Alibaba was considering.
