As with the human body, and the land itself, so too the Balinese pura is divided into zones that reflect different levels of ritual purity. This means that different sorts of activities can occur in the different zones of a temple (pura). There are typically three zones or mandalas in a puraThe outer mandala has an open field that can be used for ritual performances (such as Barong and Rangda).Further inside the temple, a second mandala is for ritual activities concerned with the upkeep of the temple, such as preparing food and keeping musical instruments. The innermost mandala is the most sacred area, and contains the throne of the highest deity. It also has a multi-level tower and is used to store sacred relics.
