Community based recognition and treatment
Training village health workers to recognise the clinical signs
of neonatal pneumonia has been shown to reduce total and
pneumonia mortality in several projects in remote areas. A
meta-analysis of five studies of community based trials from
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Tanzania, and Nepal showed a
pooled reduction in total mortality of 27% (95% confidence
interval 18% to 35%) and a reduction in pneumonia mortality
of 42% (95% confidence interval 57% to 22%).44
