Scotland is bigger than England but has only a small population. The north of Scotland is mainly agricultural, but there is a lot of industry in the south. In the north, they raise a lot of cattle to provide beef and sheep to provide wool. Shipping and trains used to be the most important industries, but they are less important to day. The standard of living is a little lower in Scotland than in England, but the cost of living is lower, too. Edinburgh in the south – east is a very rich part of Scotland, but the north – west is quite poor. Scotland’s biggest exports are whisky and clothes, made of Harris Tweed. Like England, Scotland imports cars and domestic machinery, such as fridges and washing machines, from abroad.
