It is often believed that figural images are prohibited in Islamic art, but this is not the case. The Quran forbids the use of idols for religious worship. It does not ban figural representation. However, statements in hadith literature do speak out against the depiction of living creatures, and condemn the artist for seeming to create a living form, a power exclusive to God. For both of these reasons, imgaes are never used in the Quran, mosque decoration or any strictly religious context in Islamic art. Instead, scared art and architecture are decorated with geometric designs, scrolling stylized leaves and flowers, and calligraphy – usually quoting Quranic verses.
Outside of the sacred realm, pictures of people, animals and birds have been produced throughout Islamic art history, from Spain to India, in almost every decorative medium. Even three-dimensional sculpture was known: incense-burners, ewers, fountainheads and other figurines in the shape of animals and birds, as well as high-relief stucco wall panels. Particularly popular in the 11th-14th centuries, figures and animals are the main decorative theme of cairene lusterware, rock crystal and ivory, Kashan lusterware and minai ceramics, and inlaid metalwork from Mosul, to name only a few centres of production.
Typical subjects dwell on aspects of court life: drinking with musical entertainment and dancers, romantic endounters, hunting on hourseback, and formal throne scenes, where visiting dignitaries are received. Motifs of hunting animal pairs, such as a lion attacking a deer, were also commonly used. They reinforce the theme of power, and the ruler’s right to it.
Many figural themes show artistic continuity from pre-lslamic times: Samanid polychrome ceramics made in the 10th century in north-eastern Iran seem to favour royal images recalling the pre-Islamic Sasanian empire of Iran.
In 10th – 12th century Egypt, Fatimid art shows vogue for genre scenes, such as wrestles, which may refer to inherited, classical traditions.
Across the Islamic world, figure painting can be seen in luxury manuscipts. Books have long been treasured in the Middle East, and many bibliophile rulers and clvilians collected books with passion Historic libraries are recorded.
