Comparison of the percent of patients meeting quality
indicators if treated by a third-year resident to a similarly designed
study using chart abstraction to measure diabetes care in a resident
staffed clinics (11) indicates superior performance by third-year
residents. For example, 39.6% of the patients of our third-year
residents had A1C lower than 7.0% compared with 30% of the
patients in the resident clinic. Control of LDL cholesterol was much
higher for our resident providers compared with the resident clinic
(69.5% vs. 23%). Documented eye examinationwas less often met by
our third-year residents than by the resident clinic (50% vs. 31.9%).
The percent of patients who received a foot examination by our
third-year residents was similar to that of the resident clinic
