Risk Factors for Unplanned Extubation
Among the 191 patients who were physically
restrained, 82 had an unplanned extubation. Background
information was compared between patients
in the unplanned extubation group and patients in
the control group to identify the factors contributing
to unplanned extubation (Table 3, upper section).
Age, APACHE II scores, GCS score, restraint method,
route of intubation, and sedative status did not
differ significantly between the unplanned extubation
and control groups. However, the unplanned
extubation group had a higher rate of nosocomial
infection than did the control group (29.3% vs
15.6%, P = .02).
