AN EXAMPLE FROM THE BOONDOCKS
Nyaskhar Community Primary School is one of the remotest schools in Pemagatshel. Reaching services is difficult and the school has to often take unique initiatives to make the life of the students better.
With support from the local community, the school principal, teachers, and students initiated various programmes to improve school infrastructure and sanitation. The initiatives were framed considering four key principles of cost-effectiveness, efficiency, sustainability, and ownership.
The activities included (but were not limited to) the following:
1. Development of mini children’s park, disposal pits, temporary dining shed, and water tap.
2. Compulsory laundry every Wednesday, and other activities like drying plates and containers in the sun after washing them, brushing teeth after lunch, use of soap to wash hands, drinking filtered water, regular hair and nail cut, and keeping the toilets clean.
The results of the initiatives were:
1. Improved school sanitation which reduced waterborne diseases. As a result there was drastic improvement in students’ attendance, especially in summer.
2. Inculcated the values of team work, ownership, responsibility, community volunteerism in students.
3. Developed clean and green school compound for children to study in better learning atmosphere.
