Bernard Kouchner was born in the French city of Avignon in 1939, and he became a medical doctor. In 1968, Kouchner was horrified when he learned about the effects of the famine in Biafra, near Nigeria, and he rushed to assist th. people in the area. In1971, Kouchner co-founded Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF), or Doctors withourt Border, an international medical humanitarian organization based inParis, which provides emergancy aid in nearly 70 countries. The organization assists people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, and disasters, and others who lack basic health care because of social circumstances or geographical isolation. The help is given regardless of established national borders, race, religion, creed, or political belief.
