4.2.4 A14-Cross Docking
One role of cross docking is to break full truckload
(FTL) freight which is arrived by railway or road into
bulk for further distribution; the other is to gather
enough volume of less than truckload (LTL) freight
from various shippers or arrived by light-vans, then
transport the freight by using FTL carriers. Cross
docking can be decomposed into five sub-activities,
namely, cargo arrival, unloading, tallying, loading and
delivery (as shown in Fig. 8). These activities are
connected by cargo flow, and their outputs are mainly
shipment of different types.
