Most people nowadays perceive English vocabulary as the crucial element; it plays an important role in communication. When people learn a foreign language, most people have strong feelings towards words. Words are very rewarding objects of study for language learners. According to Katamba (1994: 2), an understanding of words gives students a panoramic view of the entire field of linguistics because they impinge on every aspect of language structure. People cannot speak the language if they do not know vocabulary. Without knowing vocabulary, verbal communication cannot happen. This is to say people may not use the language to communicate successfully if they lack lexical knowledge. Learning vocabulary is likely to be one of the easiest things concerning learning a language, but it is also one of the hardest things to do, especially when people have reached an advanced level. Moreover, several studies (Nation, 1990, O’Malley and Chamot, 1990) of vocabulary learning reveal that second language learners need to know a great number of words for effective communication. Noticeably, Intaraprasert (2005) claims vocabulary still appears to be the major problem for students who study English as a foreign language (EFL). However, the researcher believes that people can improve their word power if they have effective strategies for learning vocabulary to help them comprehend the meanings of words.
