of findingasetofvehicleroutesofminimumcost,suchthatevery
required edgeisservicedbyonevehicle,eachroutestartsandends
at thedepotandthetotaldemandservicedbyaroutedoesnot
exceed thevehiclecapacity.TheCARPisNP-hard.GoldenandWong
[3] showed thateven1.5-approximationfortheCARPisalsoNP-
hard. ExactmethodsfortheCARPhaveonlybeenabletosolvesmall
problems tooptimality [7–10]. Tosolveproblemsofarealisticsize,
researchers haveresortedtoheuristicalgorithms.
Dror [11] discusses differentheuristicsfortheCARP,including
simple constructiveheuristicsandsomemetaheuristicalgorithms.
Hertz andMittaz [12] give anadaptationofvariableneighborhood
search (VNS)totheCARP.Muyldermansetal. [13] develop 2-opt
and 3-optlocalsearchalgorithmsforthearcandgeneralrouting
problems. Twoformsofthe2-optand3-optapproachesareapplied
to theproblems,whicharesimplerthanthemethodsdeveloped
by Hertzetal. [14]. Basedontheseprocedures,Beullensetal. [15]
introduce aguidedlocalsearchheuristicfortheCARP.Experiments
on standardbenchmarkproblemsandthenewlydevelopedinstances
indicate thatthealgorithmiscapableoffindingoptimalornear-
optimal solutionswithinalimitedcomputationtime.Lacommeet
al. [16] present somepowerfulmemeticalgorithmsfortheCARP.
Based onthetabusearchalgorithm,EgleseandLi [17], Brandãoand
Eglese [18] and Greistorfer [19] present thealgorithmsfortheCARP.
Brandão andEglese [18] propose adeterministicalgorithmthatdoes
not requiretheuseofrandomparametervalues,sothattheresults
are fullyreproducible,whileGreistorfer [19] makes useofthescatter
search. Ergunetal. [1] propose agreedyalgorithmfortheshipper
collaboration problem,whichissimilartotheCARP,butignoresthe
constraint thateachvehicletourmuststartandfinishatadesignated
depot.
Contrary totheCARP,themultipledepotsCARP(MDCARP)has
received relativelylessattention.Eglese [20] presents atwo-stage
solution procedurefortheMDCARP.Inthefirststage,anEulerian
graph ispartitionedintosmallcycles,andcyclesareaggregatedinto
routes usingagreedysavingheuristic.Inthesecondstage,asimu-
lated annealingalgorithmisadoptedtoimprovethesolution.Am-
berg etal. [21] investigate atwo-phasealgorithmfortheMDCARP.
First, theproblemoffindingthespecificroutesismodeledastheca-
pacitated minimumspanningtreeproblemandaheuristicisapplied
to yieldinitialsolutions.Second,twometaheuristicsareappliedto

presented anexactalgorithmforsolvingtheMDCARPFLsofar.They
