In 1847 engineers wanted to build a bridge across the Niagara Gorge, but they had a problem. No one could think of how to get the first cable across the river. Then someone had an idea— maybe a kite could be flown over the river. The kite string could be used to pull a rope across, and then the rope could be used to pull the first steel cable. The engineers offered five dollars to anyone who could fly a kite across the river. Many people tried and failed. Everyone went home except a young child who kepttrying and finally succeeded. The youngest received the five dollars— and a place in history
