The methodology used in this project was derived from previous projects , with the data collection forms being redesigned to allow the collection of the additional patient-oriented information shown in Table 1. No adverse comments were received from participants, despite the additional work and time required to collate the information on the history of the failed restorations. The data presented relates to the age at which restorations fail and should not be confused with the actual longevity of all restorations. Further work is required to determine the proportion of failed/sound restorations in mouths at any given time to determine the actual life of a restoration from data such as that presented. However, the limited data available on the age of restorations in situ do not indicate major differences between the restorations in situ and those at the time of failure
