In order to engage in the healthy behaviors, key groups need to be aware of their risk for severe or life-threatening diseases and perceive that benefits of behavior change outweigh potential barriers or the negative aspects of recommended action

Perceive benefits: The individual’s perceptions of the advantages of adopting recommended actions that would eventually reduce the risk for disease severity, morbid , and mortality
Perceive Barriers: The individual’s perceptions of the costs of an obstacles to adopting recommended actions (Includes economics costs as well as other kinds of lifestyle sacrifices)
HBM = a risk learning model (Pechmann, 2001) Knowledge will bring change
Knowledge is delivered to target through educational approach that focuses on message, channels and spokespeople (Andreasen, 1995)
