The present study attempted to investigate the effect of reduction recasts on the improvement of the
speaking ability of Iranian intermediate level EFL learners. After administering a language
proficiency test, 44 homogeneous students were randomly assigned to the experimental and
comparison groups. During 10 sessions of instruction, the experimental group received reduction
recasts and the comparison group received non-reduction recasts. After the treatment, both groups
took part in the speaking posttest. The result of the study indicated that there was a statistically
significant difference between the groups. Therefore, it was concluded that recast could improve the
students‘ speaking ability.
