Fear of Movement-Related Pain Acquisition
This phase was largely identical to the practice phase with the exception that 1) pain-USs were presented, 2)
3 blocks of 8 trials were run instead of 2 blocks, and 3) instructions now emphasized to pay close attention to the
starting signal ‘‘1’’ and to respond as fast and accurately as possible on its presentation. The pain-US was presented
on each CS1 trial, immediately after the CS1 movement was executed, but not on the CS trials.
Note that participants were never informed about the contingencies between the joystick movements (CSs)
and the pain-US. After each conditioning block, fear of movement-related pain of the CSs was rated on a
computerized numerical 11-point scale.
