A dozen of peaks were identified (Table 3). The most abundant one is by far the peak of compound IX, with tR = 21 min.
The mass spectrum of this compoundwas found by other authors and identified as 2-formylcinnamaldehyde (IX). Itwas also identified by NMR and FTIR [14,13,16,32]. Pramauro et al. [10] identified this spectrum as benzalmalonic dialdehyde, but no
simple mechanism can explain the formation of such a compound. 2-Formylcinnamaldehyde is also a major product of
naphthalene photolysis
