4. Conclusion and recommendations
Despite the low efficiency observed for CW, this study concludes
that the CW is still a possible technology for reducing faecal
coliforms and pathogen loads in developing countries. On one side,
the challenges that have been found in the performance of this CW
system are principally due to lack of routine monitoring and maintenance.
In this regard, this system may return to its normal operation
once routine inspection and maintenance return to normal.
On the other hand, the management should also consider the role
of end users (community) of effluent waters because the current
pressure on water reuse for paddy farming has been linked to
low efficiency of the CW. In the same vein, the problem can be
tackled by developing a comprehensive site evaluation, which will
consider an integrated approach to solving issues relating to social,
cultural, environmental and economic conditions in the target
area.
