3. Either hand out a simple form or have students take out a piece of paper and list three to five goals they hope to achieve by taking your course. Explain that by “goals” you mean specific things they hope to learn. If you are teaching a required course, you may suggest that “to complete the requirement” and “to do well in the course” are general goals that everyone shares; therefore, the students don’t have to repeat these goals but can write much more specific answers about what they hope to learn instead. Make sure the students understand that they are not to write names on their responses. This goal- writing step should take no more than three to five minutes.
