Motivational interviewing (12) was used to increase motivation
for change in those patients who were ambivalent. Key concepts
fostered in this style of interviewing are that responsibility for
problems and their consequences is left with the patient, and efforts
to change are not started before the patient has committed
himself or herself to particular goals and strategies. The individual
cognitive behavior therapy was modified from approaches
used to ameliorate delusions and hallucinations in patients with
chronic psychosis (15). The general approach to family intervention
was as described elsewhere (16).
