Self-regulation failure results when an individual fails to control an impulse or behavior3; self-regulation has also been referred to as “self-control” or “impulse control.”4- 6 While the capacity to self-regulate may vary across domains within a person,7 there is evidence to suggest that the capacity to self-regulate is more trait than state. In studies of young children, self-regulation measured in early childhood was linked to parent and teacher ratings of self-regulation or impulsivity later in life.4,8- 10
