Some group medical expense insurance policies contain another type of coordination of benefits provision, generally called a nonduplication of benefits provision, that limits the amount payable if the plan is defined as the secondary plan. A non duplication of benefits provision is a COB provision that, if included in a secondary provider's plan, limits the amount payable by the secondary plan to the difference, if any, the amount paid by the primary plan and the amount that would have been payable by the secondary plan had that plan been the primary plan. A nonduplication of benefits provision requires the insured individual to pay a portion of the cost of covered medical expenses and, thus, more strictly limits the amount of benefits payable than does the coB provision we discussed previously.
