King County Bar Association’s Pro Bono Services recognizes Kirstyn Palmisano as Volunteer of the Month for the month of November for her dedication to representation of domestic-violence survivors in both family law and domestic violence protection order cases through the Family Law Mentor Program.
Palmisano has been a volunteer with the Family Law Mentor Program for several months and she has represented three clients already. She is presently representing a domestic-violence survivor, a mother of two, in a contested case involving a petition to establish a parenting plan case. She successfully represented her two other clients, each in domestic-violence protection order hearings.
“Kirstyn has been fearless when it comes to taking on new clients and cases,” according to Kim Todaro, managing attorney of the Family Law Mentor Program. Following the initial mentor training, Palmisano not only appeared in her family law case, but asked for a domestic-violence protection order case to get more experience.
Palmisano graduated from the University of Washington School of Law in 2008. Since then, she has done legal contract work in land use and predatory-lending defense. But the majority of her time has been spent on her volunteer commitments. In addition to her work at KCBA, Palmisano volunteers for Team Child with the Juvenile Civil Legal Services Department striving to keep children in school.
According to Palmisano, her participation with the KCBA Family Law Mentor Program has “been a great experience,” which she would “recommend to anyone interested in learning more about family law.”
Palmisano entered the program with no family law experience and has been in court on several occasions on behalf of her pro bono clients. Palmisano said that the most satisfying part is “working with the clients” and seeing how her “legal skills can really make a difference for clients and their families.”
Palmisano plans to open her own law practice later this year, focusing primarily on family law and criminal law. When Palmisano is not practicing law, she enjoys camping and fishing around Washington.
Congratulations to Kirstyn Palmisano for being selected as the November Volunteer of the Month, and many thanks for her continued dedication to serve clients in need who cannot afford legal representation.
