Ashworth’s (1991) “Internationalism and our ‘Strenuous Family’ ” is a call for TESOL professionals to work across differences and construct richer discourses and practices. We also began to identify modernity as partisan, influenced by the values and ideologies of the European enlightenment (Mignolo, 2000). There were alternate ways of thinking about language, communication, and knowledge based on inquiry traditions of other communities.
