31.1 The selection of the most appropriate type of vascular access device ( VAD) for therapeutic apheresis occurs in collaboration with the patient/caregiver and the interprofessional team based on the projected treatment plan
practice criteria
A. consider the following when choosing the most appropriate VAD for therapeutic apheresis: the type of apheresis procedure ( centrifugation-based or filter-based systems); the patient's vascular anatomy;acuity; frequency and treatment duration; and underlying disease state.(IV)
B. Peripheral or central VADs are recommended for therapeutic apheresis as follows:
1. Use of 16 to 18 gauge peripheral catheters placed in antecubital veins for adults. Peripheral vain access is not recommended in young childen(
